South Africa Unfazed by Salah and Marmoush Ahead of Crucial AFCON Group Clash
South Africa coach Hugo Broos says his team does not fear Egypt stars Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush ahead of their crucial AFCON Group B clash. Egypt edged Zimbabwe 2–1 in their opener, but South Africa remain confident of matching the tournament heavyweights.
Egypt, one of the tournament’s traditional heavyweights, began their campaign with a narrow 2–1 victory over Zimbabwe in Morocco on Monday. Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush brought Egypt level in that match after Zimbabwe had taken a surprise lead, before Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah struck late to secure all three points. The result underlined Egypt’s attacking quality but also exposed moments of vulnerability.
Broos acknowledged the individual brilliance of Salah and Marmoush, both of whom play at the highest level in England, but stressed that South Africa’s preparation is focused on collective performance rather than fear of star names. According to the Belgian coach, football at international level is decided by teamwork, discipline and execution, not by reputation or club pedigree.
South Africa, known as Bafana Bafana, view the Group B clash as an opportunity to test themselves against elite opposition and strengthen their position in the group. Broos emphasized that his players are aware of Egypt’s strengths but are equally confident in their own tactical structure and ability to compete.
The encounter is expected to be one of the defining matches of the group stage, with Egypt aiming to maintain momentum after their opening win and South Africa seeking a statement result against one of Africa’s most decorated teams. With qualification hopes at stake, both sides are set for an intense and closely contested battle.
As the Africa Cup of Nations gathers pace, the match will serve as a reminder that while star power can decide moments, tournament success ultimately depends on cohesion, resilience and belief—qualities South Africa are determined to showcase against Egypt’s celebrated duo.
